1 8 8 8 I am familiar with the NRP projects conducted by BMNA and its committees.
28 8 8   It seems a few things I know a lot about and some almost nothing.
50 8 8   Just recently became aware! Visited website.
213 8 8   Has to do with how much I am paying attention -- No fault of BMNA!
279 8 8   yes
1 9 9 9 Bryn Mawr Neighborhood Association (BMNA) has been effective in meeting its purpose as stated in its bylaws in each of the following areas :
1 9a 9.1 9a Strengthening community
1 9b 9.2 9b Improving the quality of life in our community
1 9c 9.3 9c Fostering good personal relationships in our community
98 9c 9.3   For me
1 9d 9.4 9d Offering channels for information and communication in our community
1 10 10 10 Bryn Mawr Neighborhood Association (BMNA) has been effective in meeting the goals of its Neighborhood Revitalization Program Action Plan:

224 10 10   How would I know?   I would like to know.
1 10a 10.1 10a Maintain and enhance the quality and diversity of the housing stock to retain and attract neighbors to Bryn Mawr
48 10a 10.1   It's really white here
213 10a 10.1   Housing looks pretty good and remodeling and fixing up is regularly done.  Graph shows 41% of Phase I went to housing
1 10b 10.2 10b Present Bryn Mawr as a united neighborhood containing seven areas
57 10b 10.2   Area 1 is often not included
107 10b 10.2   Include H2
1 10c 10.3 10c Provide and maintain a retail center that consists of shops serving Bryn Mawr neighbors with convenience goods and services in an area that is attractive and appealing and economically rewarding to the merchants
25 10c 10.3   Please do something about empty corner spot in Downtown B.M..!!!
55 10c 10.3   Only if traffic (customer / vendors) get redirected off of Queen -- it's like the Indy 500 down Queen!
98 10c 10.3   Economically rewarding?
100 10c 10.3   Can something be done with the retail space on NW corner of Cedar Lk. Rd. & Laurel?
107 10c 10.3   Little market / vacant corner is appalling.  Could be fantastic.
213 10c 10.3   If only Bryn Mawr Pizza would perk up its place to / inviting colors & good lighting--  It looks dingy, uninviting-- and at night eerie-  It should look as good as their food tastes --  And what's the empty space on the corner?
266 10c 10.3   Need a nice store or restaurant in that corner site (empty right now)
292 10c 10.3   Wish we could get something good at the corner of Penn

4 10g 10.7   I like seeing crime reports in the paper & via a flyer--  Thank you.
28 10g 10.7   Need more neighborhood watch encouragement and work.  Traffic still speeds down CLR 40-45 mph
70 10g 10.7   Not aware of any improvements
98 10g 10.7   Crime alerts
107 10g 10.7   At night, circle path at park not safe.
126 10g 10.7   Need more trees & lights
172 10g 10.7   Safe committee
178 10g 10.7   Light pollution is not the answer
308 10g 10.7   ?
1 10h 10.8 10h Establish education as the foundation for our future and define our neighborhood schools, Bryn Mawr Elementary and Anwatin Middle Schools, as the geographical and educational center of Bryn Mawr
98 10h 10.8   (It) didn't "establish education as the foundation…"  Didn't know as a goal.  (Schools) become the community center.
1 10i 10.9 10i Provide excellent multi-modal transportation access to and from the Bryn Mawr neighborhood, and facilities designed to ensure the safety, livability and vitality of the neighborhood
98 10i 10.9   Hope NAP has goal of bus services
107 10i 10.9   Only good for Downtown.  But you have to transfer if you're not going downtown.  #9 is nice.  LRT would be nice.
159 10i 10.9   Can they re-route yellow bus (school) away from neighborhood?  Smaller bus so they can go on parkway (we need cleaner air)
202 10i 10.9   Bike trails are excellent
207 10i 10.9   Disappointed w/ reduced bus service
213 10i 10.9   Besides bus, auto and taxi!??  But what would "multi-modal" be for this area? Replace most of 394 with light rail and provide small shuttles throughout neighborhoods
1 11 11 11 In terms of their impact on the neighborhood as a whole, the following changes have made a positive impact on Bryn Mawr:

28 11b 11.2   looks good, but  not sure any actual impact!
48 11b 11.2   pretty but hard to read / see
55 11b 11.2   they aren't big enough!
70 11b 11.2   The basic design is pleasing but they do not stand out visually
100 11b 11.2   Not noticeable enough?  Where are they all?
1 11c 11.3 11c Penn Avenue Gateway and Cedar Lake Parkway Landscaping including the addition of median planters, signage hedge, and trees; and highway clean-ups
100 11c 11.3   Looks wonderful!
101 11c 11.3   Love the hedge!
205 11c 11.3   Hedge is wonderful-- Thank you (to whomever) for maintaining it.
213 11c 11.3   That hedge needs work-- Should not be so squared off--  For better design use of curving lines would be better. Signage looks great, just needs compatibility with the entire hill space -- to relate, as they say.  Harmony.  The entire hill could make a statement
1 11d 11.4 11d Reduction of buckthorn on neighborhood parkland and residential property ("Buckthorn Busts").
98 11d 11.4   Though not all have participated
1 11e 11.5 11e Bassett’s Creek Park restorations including repairs to the falls and to the path “blow-out” erosion areas, and wildflower plantings at the creek near Fruen Mill

70 11i 11.9   I commend the effort to add art [visual history] to the design but it seems like it will be very vandal prone
308 11i 11.9   Waste of $
1 11j 11.91 11j BMNA.org website, recently redesigned and reopened
95 11j 11.91   do not use

28 11l 11.93   although would need to see costs vs. benefits to truly assess
70 11l 11.93   Probably the most important issue BMNA has involved in
308 11l 11.93   Not enough at the right time - no impact on original construction - which is when it should have been done.  I.e. limited impact -- DOT did this on its own schedule-

1 11n 11.95 11n Housing improvement program (needs-test based grant and loan programs offered 1995 through 2000).

1 11o 11.96 11o “Downtown” Bryn Mawr business improvements such as resurfacing parking lots, new canopies, windows, roofing, signage, benches, ornamental railings, newsbox enclosure, trees, flower pots, stone planters, and red-brick stamped concrete
25 11o 11.96   What can be done to get more business into Downtown BW? Empty corner is a constant eyesore!

98 11p 11.97   Saturnalia -- too cold!
311 11p 11.97   !

28 13 13   Think so but not 100% sure
159 13 13   We need the rest of the dirt alleys done--  Hold the area together and not favor one over the other even if people don't demand help like some do. This is Bryn Mawr as a whole great area to live in.
211 13 13   Sometimes items  meetings have happened by the time we get paper
292 13 13   Don't know enough, but I think so

1 20 20 20 Other comments about past or future neighborhood projects, NRP, BMNA or this survey
2 20 20   As we get older, we would like to see Bryn Mawr develop like the Lincoln Park neighborhood of Chicago.  Some condo-type housing S of 394 with retail -- including a full-service restaurant and larger grocery store.
4 20 20   Thank you for your efforts to make Bryn Mawr the very livable neighborhood it is.   One item that would be nice to see addressed would be recycling. I know the city has pick-ups every two weeks, I also think it would be nice to have a central location where residents can take their recyclables. I think once every two weeks is too long & people forget or if they "miss the day" everything goes to the regular trash. If the idea is promoted then I believe the people will become even more involved in the crucial world of recycling.  Thanks for listening.  3 sites!!!  1) Elementary School parking lot. 2) Parking lot  along Cedar Lake & Vincent. 3) ???  Take the kids on a walk and recycle!!! ---> Oh no, exercise AND recycle.
18 20 20   Sorry.  We couldn't give more feedback, we just moved here in Sept.
21 20 20   Thanks for all the hard work to make our community better!  I am not sure what role the BMNA played in the new playground at 24th and Drew, but it sure improves the quality of life.  I would encourage the BMNA not to over-react or to be intimidated by a single person or a small group of people.
25 20 20   Please do something about Downtown BM.  It would be nice to have a neighborhood restaurant that we all could enjoy.  The corner store is an eyesore and brings down the rest of the neighborhood area!
28 20 20   Add a program for youth. What about a youth volunteer to help seniors that may need help from able bodied young people in exchange for senior buddy & a sense of history. So worth it for kids -- screen on both ends & require seniors to provide aid to teens in some way - tutor / mentor. Please try to do something to control how fast people drive down CLR between Penn & Wirth Pkwy -- they fly! Recently had someone steal something from backyard while working on in front yard. Would help if we worked to encourage folks to know their neighbors & watch! I know most do, but that was scary - the nerve to take in broad daylight. Police program to ID tag items (lawn mowers, etc) & register them. Greater police presence. (Since substation gone - lot less cops). Really believe neighborhood dense enough. (Don't need growth / new housing). Need to maintain quality of current. With recent rise in property value many people couldn't afford their own homes if just moving in. Need help keeping up their property & new upwardly mobile & upper income neighbors.
45 20 20   Keep Mill as is.  Unusual for a neighborhood to have an abandoned mill structure.   Like to run around in it--  Lots of cool old machinery.  No idea what machinery did.  5 different levels.  Old, very cool.
50 20 20   Doesn't like (despises) Saturnalia festival-- Christmas shouldn't be made into a Ragan Roman festival just because you are afraid to celebrate Christmas or Hanukah-
52 20 20   I think we should organize a summer neighborhood festival / block party at BM Meadows.  Live music, cookout, name tags and a chance to meet… and nurture the 7 areas as ONE community.   Nothing all that lavish -- just an offering of some food, free entertainment and some neighborly love...  If you offer (publicly) -- I'll help organize...  Thanks!!
55 20 20   * Add security lighting in downtown Bryn Mawr.  * Can signs be added to alley between Penn / Queen 200 block -- "slow down" "no thru traffic" or "residents only"?  How fast people drive and how much store traffic travels down the alley -- an accident waiting to happen!
66 20 20   Sorry to be late!
68 20 20   Concerned about increase in crime & recent break-ins -- also the behavior of kids coming home from Anwatin -- very disruptive and destructive at times
78 20 20   I wish bus #9 had more frequent stops on Glenwood Ave.
95 20 20   Would like to see a remodeler's showcase event in the neighborhood, need more NRP funds for moderate income homeowners, would like to see a community center built.  Vida Ditter does an excellent job -- kudos for all her hard work!
98 20 20   I would question the amount of users of Bassett's Creek Park vs. Brownie Lake / Cedar lake.  I never see people using the Bassett's Creek Park trails vs. a lot of people use the Brownie Lake paths.
100 20 20   As a parent with a young child I'm disappointed to say we are looking at moving primarily because of traffic  / lot size and schools.  It would be helpful if the Bugle could write about the true quality of area schools including public vs. private, language immersion schools, costs, transportation, etc.  It would be a share to lose residents who've made their decision base solely on the general assumption that "Minneapolis schools are bad."
102 20 20   * Parking is bad for the park users.  Park along Morgan sometimes, leaving 203 blocks to the park.  Plus, if residents' cars are parked in lot (2-3) parking tickets received on car when left overnight when no other parking was available. It's inconvenient to have to move the car and atypical in this type of a neighborhood.  Suggestion: add critical parking area signage or parking on both sides of Morgan.  *  Only one off street parking space for 10 vehicles of apartment renters in building. As a grad student, respondent can sometimes use this space. Park should not be expanded unless parking is added.
107 20 20   Most important comment--> Vacant store on NW corner of Penn Ave and Cedar Lake Road is appalling.  It wouldn't have to be too much.  It could be so nice.  The south side of the street is so successful!    Safety: Bryn Mawr Meadows feels safe during the day, but I would not walk on the  outer circular perimeter path at night. Solution goes beyond better lighting -- it's just too much on the fringe.
123 20 20   Calming traffic along Penn  Ave should NOT be a financial priority for the BMNA.  Penn Ave. is a through street in an area just off the downtown of a major metropolitan area.  Efforts to make it resemble a suburban cul-de-sac will not make it so! This money would be better spent on affordable housing planning and park improvements.
130 20 20   I encourage our community to embrace other cultures. I think we would be a stronger community if we were more racially diverse. I'm proud to be a resident of Bryn Mawr and appreciate all the work the City of Minneapolis, NRP BMNA and the residents do to make this community thrive.         National Night Out has really brought me closer to my neighbors and made me more aware of the people around me. I know what looks out of place and am comfortable inquiring or contacting the police when necessary.
133 20 20   I find that street lights and street lamps are frequently out along Cedar Lake -- no doubt much of this is due to bridge construction but response time is often slow when outages are reported--  Also Area 1 has a high number of power outages that are not storm related.  Also the lights preceding and under the westbound Penn Ave exit off of 394 have been out for the past 6 months. It would help to know who to contact when problems are noted.
135 20 20   The Bryn Mawr festival of garage sales have been fun. If we aren't committed elsewhere we usually shop and host a sale when we need to downsize -- like this year upcoming -- 2005!
145 20 20   Great job Everyone!
149 20 20   Our neighborhood is full of people who walk which is a very good thing. Neighbors get to know each other when they are out walking. They are observe each others' homes, notice improvements, are inspired to make improvements of their own, spot problems, prevent crime, etc. To encourage walking and to make the area as civilized as possible, I would like to see continuous public sidewalks on all residential public streets. NRP funds could be used to assist homeowners to install sidewalks and landscape their yards as needed to make room for sidewalks.
159 20 20   Over the years Bryn Mawr is still a great place to live & be proud of. People are free to talk to each other -- and live their private lives. We need to report crime and live safe-- (Thanks to the man who helped the cops catch the thief).   You all work so hard.  Thanks.  The rainbow at the church signage need to go -- It's offensive to the straight.  Wake up, it's only a building & not a church -- been gone for some time.
172 20 20   * Addressing property tax increases for seniors (on fixed incomes) who are in danger of losing homes -- especially widows and widowers. Seniors would move into smaller, well-designed townhomes if there were these types of housing designed and built in the neighborhood.  * Schools should be designed so as to be able to be converted to other uses such as senior or other housing or offices. As the school census goes up and down.  70,000 students - baby boomers, then 30,000 - 35,000 students, then 50,000 students, now 20,000? students, with the cycle of homenwoners staying in their homes, the children grow up and away.
178 20 20   NRP should be more proactive in bringing into focus issues that have a potentially negative impact on the neighborhood (Anwatin woods development) that may have been thwarted in the early stages of planning, development and even property sale.    BMNA should be closely monitoring these situations, analyzing potential impact & bringing them to the attention of the neighborhood board.
182 20 20   * Events make community.  * Parks are areas (natural and developed) important to invest in / key to making it a unique neighborhood.  * Gardens make it unique effect. * Property value increase is intangible - more events / special events bring people into neighborhood.
185 20 20   Many of the programs and projects are the result of naïve and overly precious expectation. It would be better if our resources were spent on improving and maintaining the basic quality of our neighborhood and the discouragement of anti-social incursions.
190 20 20   I am new to Bryn Mawr (60 days). Much of what is known as NRP is unknown to me. I like what I have seen and heard of BMNA. You should be pleased that someone so new to Bryn Mawr knows "so much". Good work, thank you.
193 20 20   Would like to see police report for Bryn Mawr printed in the Bugle.  Bugle is often disseminated late -- too late to participate in some events.
194 20 20   I am strongly opposed to the development in Anwatin woods.  I do not think that allowing densely located homes fits the "ideal: of area 7 regardless of the cost of these homes.
206 20 20   Please reorganize efforts to slow down traffic on Penn Avenue!
207 20 20   Enjoy living in the neighborhood. Fantastic access to Park lands & bicycle trails!  Wonderful active neighborhood association.
211 20 20   I received this Dec 13
215 20 20   New resident - 2 months new.  Is coming to BMNA Board meeting this Wednesday
220 20 20   The Bryn Mawr Music Festival was not supported enough to keep it going.  I heard the store boycotted the festival for personal grievance.  We need music in Bryn Mawr. There are many, many musicians / artists in Bryn Mawr & the festival was a good attempt to celebrate the neighborhood talent.
229 20 20   The mailing received Nov 15 is the first informational mailing ever received about the NRP.
231 20 20   I love this neighborhood and thank all the people who have helped to make it so vibrant and welcoming.  I wish I had more time to volunteer and appreciate those who put in so many hours.
233 20 20   I have no website, so I depend on reading the Bugle, and getting information from neighbors.  I've been in Bryn Mawr 45 years, and love it.  I hope I live long enough to enjoy more.  Keep it up with what you are trying to achieve.  Keep downtown looking good, and keep check on traffic on Penn.  Try to keep undesirables out so we can keep our good name.
234 20 20   Improve Bryn Mawr meadows access for neighborhood & area schools sports groups. Bryn Mawr meadows is the home field for many schools such as Anwatin, North High School, softball practices, west side soccer.  Trying to get / difficult finding out schedule because the adult leagues leasing out the field arrive early-- Kids and I like additional batting cage. Even though it opened too late for us.  It's always locked -- it would be nice if the neighborhood kids could use the batting cage.  (Possible participant for the youth focus group).  The Cuppa Java market - nice to hang out for kids -- This is where the kids hang out -- there's no other place for them to hang out.
238 20 20   Thank you to the volunteers!
239 20 20   * I had read that the NRP team had asked for a proposal for the crosswalk area of Cedar Lake and Penn intersection -- which was to make the crosswalk more noticeable by putting bricks down in the crosswalk.  Nothing was done or said why they didn't decide to do that.  * Speeding on Penn and Cedar Lake Road needs to continue to be addressed. I saw a person go at least 50 from Upton to Theo Wirth Pkwy.  * Lighting-- I walk in the evenings and there is still very poor street lights -- safety.  * Parking at the intersection Penn / Cedar -- yellow curbs should be put in 10 ft from stoplight at 4-way intersection. The intersection is open and safe.
242 20 20   1) I don't think neighborhood money should be used to support special interest groups such as "Save Anwatin Woods" since it is not supported by all neighborhood residents.  2) I feel the speed on Penn Ave is not properly enforced. I also cross Penn and/or Cedar Lake Rd daily when I get on/off the bus, and at least once a week I am almost hit by inattentive drivers. Now that it's dark in the morning and evening I have to take special care to cross the street to ensure that I don't get hit. I tell my husband once a week that if I don't make it home some day to check the corner to see if I've been fatally hit... and I'm not kidding... That intersection is dangerous.  So I believe more than 1% of the funds can be used to avoid pedestrian accidents and provide safe streets.
243 20 20   I wish the Bugle had fewer redundancies.    It seems to me that helping lower income homeowners should take the form of grants more than loans. I don't think helping people get further in debt really helps them. Most people have too much debt.    Perhaps we could lobby for property tax reform as a neighborhood. That would really help lower income homeowners, a tax based on income rather than house value.    Another thing would be to help renters get into a home with downpayment help.   Thank you.
244 20 20   Thanks to all the volunteers and involved people who make this such a vibrant neighborhood.  As we look ahead to retirement and the need to downsize and find a place to live with less upkeep and maintenance, we worry that the housing options in Bryn Mawr will mean we'll have to leave this neighborhood that we love so much. I would hope more modestly priced condo or townhouse type housing can be added to our area, so that people at all stages of life can stay here and enjoy the roots they've put down.
252 20 20   As our neighborhood becomes a more desirable place to live it becomes a more desirable place for criminal activity. We need to increase our efforts in making our neighborhood safe, well lit, and strengthen the bond between neighbors and members of our community so that we may watch out for each other and each other's property. Additional street lighting, neighborhood watch training, and community events should be top priorities.
259 20 20   1)  Love the improved look of the Bryn Mawr "downtown".  Would love to see a viable business in the vacant storefront on the NW corner of Penn & Cedar Lake Rd. Currently it is an "eyesore".  2) Would like to see pedestrian level street lighting along all streets - improve lighting / safety in neighborhoods.
266 20 20   I'm a new resident & looking forward to getting involved!
286 20 20   Do more activities on the south side of Hwy 394
292 20 20   Thank you for all you do!
297 20 20   * Most of my "no opinion" comments are based on living in area 1.  There is a feeling of belonging more to Cedar-Isles-Dean than Bryn Mawr. But I love the north side of 294 neighborhood. It's really the physical issue of 394.  I faithfully read the Bugle and I am impressed by all that goes on in BM.  * I love the design and materials of neighborhood signage but they are too small to make any impact.
308 20 20   All /any funds should only be spent on "capital" improvements or other "tangible" assets -- not this "touchy-feely" good neighbor crap -- better lighting - housing improvements, gardens, trails, -- stay out of those "development" issues -- if there is a lot or lots available to develop - great -- that's what we have a city council / zoning department, city planners, etc. for! They are well paid via our prop. taxes & that's where I assume NRP funds originate = taxes
317 20 20   Area is 2xx Thomas
none 20 20   We need affordable housing not tacky lamp posts!
