Stories I Didn’t Know Film Showing

March 21, 2023 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

Bryn Mawr Film Series

The BMNA and Racial Justice Committee will be hosting a series of film screenings.

The BMNA Racial Justice Committee is continuing our film series with Stories I Didn’t Know directed by Rita Davern and Melody Gilbert. In this hour-long documentary, St. Paul settler-descendant Rita Davern examines an ugly reality at the heart of a Minnesota family legend. While her family members have proudly stated that their ancestors once owned Pike Island, the story of its acquisition is far less glorious than its profitability. Along the way she meets Santee Dakota member Ramona Kitto Stately, who helps her to understand the significance of Pike Island, and the importance of knowing who you are and where you came from. Rita’s attempts to understand more leads her to face the complicated legacy of westward expansion in the United States along with her own family dynamics.

We will show the film and host an audience Q&A with both Rita Davern and Ramona Kitto Stately, along with Ramona’s son Reuben, a recording artist who represents the next generation of Dakota storytelling under the name Kitto.

This free screening of Stories I Didn’t Know will be at the SRF Building auditorium, 3701 S Wayzata Blvd, on Tuesday, March 21st, at 7pm. Please register below to help us plan the event. Advance registration is preferred but not required. The BMNA will provide popcorn and water. We also encourage you to sign up for the BMNA email list at https://www.bmna.org/bryn-mawr-newsletter-registration/ for details to come on future film screenings throughout this winter and spring!
