Racial Justice Movie Series

This month the Active Transportation and Racial Justice Committees of the BMNA will host the screening of two films documenting noteworthy bicycling achievements by African Americans during the 1890s. We have invited several predominantly African American bicycle organizations to join us for these screenings.

The first film, “The Bicycle Corps: America’s Black Army on Wheels”, documents the trek of an African American army regiment based in Montana from their home base to St. Louis Mo. The 1900 mile trip, completed in 41 days in 1897 was intended to demonstrate the utility of the bicycle for military purposes. The second is a short film, “The Six Day Race: The Marshall ‘Major’ Taylor Story”. It tells the story of a black teenaged cyclist who enters the fabled six day endurance bicycle race held at Madison Square Garden in 1896 some six moths before the adventures related in the first film. Marshall ‘Major’ Taylor goes on to be a world champion and is still considered to be one of the greatest America sprint cyclist.

Screening of these two films will be at the SRF Building auditorium, 3701 S Wayzata Blvd, on Wednesday, February 21st, at 7pm.
